The Compliance Team with friends at a seminar for the WVUBPC.

Our Story...

So there I was...

Setting in my first MBA course at the University of Charleston. We were given an assignment to enter a start up business plan into the WVU Business Plan Competition. We were told to dream big. I have worked in the Human Resources field for many years now. So naturally I decided to make a human resource firm as my start up business idea.

THE IDEA...

After just a little bit of research, I quickly realized that it would take millions of dollars to create a human resource firm the correct way. So I decided to drill down to a business plan that I could finance reasonably. So I decided that compliance usually falls into the human resource field. Also it appeared to me that compliance is an area that most companies ignore since it is cost prohibitive.

THE IDEA REFINED...

After deciding on a compliance firm, a friend asked if I would consider offering my services to small restaurants since they struggle with staying in compliance with the health department. Another friend then mentioned how a lot of taverns not only have to worry about staying in compliance with the health department, but also the Alcohol Beverage Commission (ABC). He asked if I would be willing to help out in that arena as well. This led me to the idea of offering a full service compliance department to small and medium businesses, focusing on businesses in the restaurant and tavern industry.

BACK TO THE COMPETITION...

I ended up submitting my business idea into the Thrive Competition as well. This competition was sponsored by the Charleston Area Alliance. I made it into the top 10 in both contests.  Unfortunately, I did not make it any further than that though in the Thrive contest. But I did move on to the next round in the WVUBPC. I am currently in the top 5 in my category with that competition with the final round coming up in April. I have already secured $1,000 from getting to where I am in this competition so far.

AND NOW...

I have decided to follow through with the business idea. I have got my license and tax info set up. I have implemented a marketing strategy. This came at an opportune time since I am currently taking applied marketing for my MBA.

THE FUTURE...

I retire from the WVARNG at the beginning of 2021. That will allow me the time to fully dedicate myself to this business idea. I hope to grow a small base of clients between now and my retirement. This way I will have a good handle on the best practices for this business. I fully intend on growing and franchising this business out to other counties throughout the state, hopefully one day growing nationwide.
